Perched in Auckland’s Weiti Bay amongst the Okura Bush, this design was all about family and architectural ingenuity.
The brief from the client was to create a warm and inviting home that brings family together. However, the challenge was in sticking to the stringent architectural design code governing Weiti Bay, while maximising ocean and bush views, and ensuring shelter from easterly winds.
Our response was to use two pavilions connected by a smaller scale link. The two-storey pavilion houses the master suite and grandkids' bunkroom, strategically positioned to capture coastal views to the east. The mezzanine overlooks the double-height living space, framing rural views. A separate, single-storey garage pavilion hosts guests, utility spaces and extensive storage.
Materials – including stained timber Accoya cladding, solid timber battens, and a rhythmic modular design for exterior joinery – play a key role in bringing warmth to the house, while a flat link roof extends to create outdoor living areas, fulfilling the client's need for versatile spaces suited to various weather conditions.
The clients have described the end result as instantly welcoming and homely — a generous hub for their close-knit family.
