The owners of this immaculately presented state house approached us with a brief to retain the quintessential kiwi vernacular while providing more space and privacy with a sympathetic extension. Adding living space, a pool and poolhouse, along with a direct connection between inside and out were key components.
With this extensive brief, the biggest challenge was achieving privacy from the neighbouring properties in close proximity. We responded by positioning the poolhouse between the house and the neighbours, and a sculptural brick wall on the street-facing facade.
Inside, a sunken lounge delineates the room within the open space, and original weatherboards on the interior are an ode to the home’s mid-century roots. The courtyard and pool provide a focal point for the home.
The result, featured in Here Magazine Issue No. 17, is a “mini modernist compound centred around a serene courtyard” that the clients are thrilled with.
